Black is the colour of elegance and mystery. The special past of the black tulip is a perfect example of this. Indeed, in the past, the 'black tulip' did not exist, much to the frustration of Dutch growers. For years, growers tried to grow the impossible. Until grower Jan Jacob Grullemans finally succeeded in 1895. A book was even written about it - 'La Tulipe noire'. Actually, the tulip is not really black, but deep dark purple.

Meaning of the black tulip

The tulip symbolises love for your family, friends or partner. So, giving tulips is always a good idea. But did you know that each colour has its own meaning? For example, the white tulip stands for forgiveness and the orange tulip for creativity. While the black tulip is often associated with negativity, the black tulip stands for total devotion to a loved one.

Tips

Our black tulip, named Paul Schrerer, is a late spring bloomer. This black tulip is really a must have for all history lovers and for anyone who loves black. Where do you put them and how do you combine black tulips? We give you some tips.

Combination tip: combine the black tulip with the white tulip Noordeinde for contrast or the light pink tulip Dynasty for a nice light-dark effect.

Ideal spot: tulip bulbs need a spot in full sun or semi shade. We recommend setting aside a separate part of your garden for the tulips. This gives a much nicer effect than if you plant tulips loose through your garden. You can also choose to plant them in pots so you can move them around.

Planting: plant the tulip bulbs in the ground in October or November so that they will flower beautifully in spring. Do not plant tulip bulbs after 15 December, as it will be too cold for the bulbs to make roots. Tulip bulbs can be ordered from July to October and you will receive them as soon as it is time to plant them.

In pots: tulip bulbs can be planted very well in pots. In spring, the tulips come out and you can enjoy your flower garden. Tulip bulbs can also be cut off and put in a vase for a nice bouquet at home.

Besides the infamous black tulips, we also have red tulips, pink tulips, white tulips, orange tulips and yellow tulips in our range. You will also find some special tulips in our range, such as a fringed tulip like Hawaii or double tulips.
