Gomphrena

What is a gomphrena?
A gomphrena is an annual flower seed. They are oftenly used to brighten up border and bouquets. The gomphrena has unique flowers, they are tiny and round. We sell the Gomphrena white and the Gomphrena pink.
The plant comes from Mexico and was grown there since the ancient times. The plant originally comes from the tropics in South America but is now grown all over the world. The name gomphrena is inferred of the Greek word for bud. The flowers bloom in bell-shaped buds, hence the name.
The particularity of gomphrena
Gomphrena is very easy to sow, gives colour to your garden and flowers for a long time, occasionally for 6 weeks or even longer. The gomphrena is easy to care for, she loves warm weather. Besides they are perfect to use as cut flower and as dried flowers. The flowers of the plant are already a little dry, therefore they are easy to make dried flowers with.
Tip: read our blog on how to dry a bouquet, to see how you can dry flowers.
When to plant the gomphrena
Gomphrena is on sale whole year round at FAM Flower Farm. Plant the flower seeds in mid-May until June. This is after the change of frost has passed., because the gomphrena is not perennial. They flower from June until September.
Also plant some dahlia tubers at the same time as flower seeds. This will make your garden a party. Red dahlias, dinnerplate dahlia, cactus dahlias, white dahlias and many others will stand out in your garden.
How to plant gomphrena
Find a place with a minimal of 6 hours sun per day. Then choose the right timing. Sow the seeds on a dry of lightly rainy day. Loosen the soil with a hoe and clear the soil of weeds and stones. After loosening the soil, make trenches of 0,5 cm (0,2 inches) deep. Ensure you have room to walk between the trenches. Now give the soil a little water and sow the seeds, You can use lava flour soil improver or organic fertilizer to improve the soil and strengthen the plant. After sowing you apply a thin layer of soil over the seeds. Too much soil provides that the seeds won’t sprout.
Combinations
Gomphrena is beautiful to combine with other flower seeds. Such as delphinium, aster, cosmos, phlox, amaranth, nigella and much more. The gomphrena white will look beautiful together with Scabiosa Blue Cockade or Cosmos Velouette.
Also plant some narcissus bulbs (daffodil bulbs) or tulip bulbs in October until mid-December. Your garden will then also be colourful in spring. You can plant white narcissus, yellow narcissus, white tulips and yellow tulips as spring colours. But you can also choose brighter colours, like red tulips, pink tulips, purple tulips and orange tulips.
